米Microsoft社が、同社ホームページで「Internet Explorer 3.0」(以下、IE3.0)のダウンロードサービスを開始した。Web、FTPの両方で公開されている。
今回公開されたのは英語版であり、日本語版も遅くとも月内の公開が予定されているため、一般ユーザーはそれまで待つべきだろう。編集部がIE3.0の動作を確認したところ、Betaのときと同様、今回の英語版でもEUC / Shift-JIS / JISの自動変換など、日本語の処理機能も含まれている(Internet Mail and Newsも同じ)。また、IE3.0英語版をインストールするとエクスプローラのファイルタイプのタブの内容が文字化けするトラブルが発生するのもBetaのときと同じだ。
IE 3.0は、Active Xテクノロジーに対応し、VRMLビューア、コラボレーションツールなどもバンドルされている。また、「Japanese Laguage Pack」など、多国語サポートのパッケージも配布されており、これらを使用することで各国のフォントを正常に表示することができるようになる。
一方、ライバルのNetscape社は同社のホームページでIE3.0との比較記事を掲載し、来週月曜日に正式リリースされるNavigator 3.0の優位性を主張している。
